We strongly discourage the use of tap water on your growing hair or human hair system. It is important to understand that regular tap water (a.k.a. hard water) has high amounts of chlorine and well as calcium, magnesium, and other minerals. Chlorine and other hard water minerals can be bad for your human hair system. First, hard water, mostly due to the chlorine, will fade the color of your hair over time. Secondly, tap water, especially when it's hot, will not only dry out your hair but cause it to be frizzy as well. If you use a water spray bottle to wet and style your hair, we recommend that you fill it with the filtered water or use distilled water. Note that distilled water is highly filtered and the softest water available.
For those reasons, we recommend that you purchase a multi-stage shower filter (a.k.a. hard-water filter, chlorine filter, or water softening filter) for your shower. A good shower filter should cost around $30-$60 and should last about 6 months before changing the filter insert. What's more, you can easily install one in about 5 minutes.
Lower-end shampoos and conditioners sold at drug stores and discount chain stores contain ingredients that are bad for your hair system. Or, they may fail to include high quality ingredients that can extend or even revive the look, feel, and manageability of your human hair system. We recommend that you buy one of the many products that are specially formulated for human hair systems. They are more expensive, but they will extend the overall look and life of your new hair system.
Do not wash your human hair system more than twice per week. As the cleaning agents in shampoos can strip and remove needed moisture. If you are not working in an environment that dirties your hair, consider shampooing your hair system once per week. You can, however, rinse your hair system thoroughly in the shower and condition your hair system daily. This should be more that enough to keep your hair clean, shiny and smelling great.
We recommend you use leave in conditioner up to twice daily. You can not over condition your hair system.
We strongly recommend that you DO NOT sleep on Cotton or Flannel pillow cases. These widely used pillow case types are bad for bio hair (i.e. you natural growing hair) and worse for your human hair system. The problem is that they can have a wicking effect on your hair system, which means they absorb and extract the precious moisture from your hair. This is very bad for human hair systems. What's more, they are abrasive to your hair unit by grabbing and pulling on your hair, as you toss and turn during the night. Collectively, these issues will reduce the life of your new hair system. We recommend that you replace your pillow cases with silk, satin or high-thread-count egyptian cotton, as these materials significantly reduce or eliminate any wicking or abrasive issues. By doing so, you will significantly extend the look and life of your new hair system.
Yes you can use hair sprays and styling gels on your hair. We recommend, however, that you use only alcohol free styling products on your new hair system. As alcohol can fade the color and dry out you hair system. There are many alcohol free styling products available so choose wisely.
We recommend that you use wide tooth combs or bone comb to detangle your hair and prevent breakage. Always comb through your hair system first and then brush hair. We recommend that you use wide bristle brush with a rubber base (known as a paddle brush as these types of brushes are much gentler on the hair system. Always comb through your hair system with a wide tooth comb or bone comb before showering. This will detangle your hair while it is dry; because detangling wet hair is more damaging.
Exposure to the sun and UV light will slowly oxidize your hair. Oxidation will also occur over time with chemicals and styling products. This will cause your hair to change to a lighter and warmer color. You can protect your hair by using high quality styling products with UV filters. Also, we recommend using products that are Sulfate free or specifically designed to protect color. In addition, to keeping your hair soft and supple, regularly conditioning hair will also mitigate color oxidation. Wetting your hair system with soft water or distilled water before swimming will prevent chlorinated pool water from soaking into hair and mitigate color oxidation. Additionally, If you plan on being outside for prolonged periods of time, consider wearing a hat.
